How the game changes

  • Explore Free Roam with characters, vehicles, key items, equipment and materia delivered through Archipelago. The route ends with Sephiroth; this does not recreate the ordinary linear story campaign.
  • Field pickups and optional native shop slots become checks. Shop slots keep their authored counts by default, or use a uniform one-to-ten slots per shop. Weapon fights and selected activities provide optional additional checks.
  • Progressive limit breaks are enabled by default: received copies teach the character’s next limit instead of kill/use counts. Vincent and Cait Sith have shorter ladders, while level-four manuals remain separate items.
  • Optional progressive chocobos replace individual colours with Yellow, Green, Black and Gold tiers. The option is off by default; its traversal rules distinguish mountain and ocean access.
  • The Temple of the Ancients contributes sixteen field checks in Free Roam. Reaching it requires ocean traversal and the Keystone, with the key requirement also implemented in the game.
  • Endgame areas use a soft combat requirement of two recruits alongside Cloud. The final Northern Crater barrier separately requires Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Cid, Cait Sith and Aerith, after the Highwind and four Huge Materia route.
  • New recruits can match the party leader’s level. Expensive gil-purchase and Bone Village dig checks have separate opt-outs, and the client can publish the current field for tracker tools.
  • EXP, gil and AP multipliers are configurable. Traps default to zero; DeathLink and TrapLink are optional. Market Crash removes current gil, while other traps can affect combat or trigger a forced encounter.
  • The client includes game-over reseed recovery and an explicit resync command. Fort Condor can be retried after a lost final battle when returning to the world map.
Explore game mechanics

Before you start

  • Use the 0.0.6 APWorld and Gold Saucer 0.0.6 together, with Archipelago 0.6.7+, 7th Heaven/FFNx and the classic Windows FF7_EN.exe US1.02 target. This listing covers original Final Fantasy VII, not Remake or Rebirth.
  • Keep Free Roam enabled. A linear-mode toggle remains visible in the source, but its own description says disabling Free Roam is unsupported. The sole supported victory target is Sephiroth.
  • Generate the room, import that slot’s .apff7 into Gold Saucer and build a separate output folder. Import the output into 7th Heaven and keep shophook.dll beside FF7_EN.exe. Do not change randomizer options after importing the room configuration.
  • The bundled patcher README is obsolete: its 1.0.0 heading and advice to copy over the installation do not describe the current AP workflow. Follow the source setup and use a distinct output folder; the path selector does not itself guarantee separation from your originals.
  • The patcher mentions the newer Steam installation layout, but the AP client still uses a fixed classic executable memory map and a 32-bit shop hook. Do not assume the 2026 executable, unrelated mods or arbitrary game builds are compatible. Linux/Proton support was not established.
  • Keep each patched output, save, seed and slot together, with backups of the clean installation and saves. Restart the game and client before switching campaigns; the client does not verify that a loaded native save belongs to the connected room.
  • Keep the client connected while completing checks. A shop receipt can be consumed before server acknowledgement, and pre-existing pickup flags become baseline on reattachment. Reconnecting does not guarantee recovery of checks completed offline.
  • Resync reconstructs inventory from AP grants and can restore consumed copies. Traps are marked as seen when queued, so an interruption before their effect can leave them skipped. This recovery is not an exact-once guarantee.
  • The APWorld archive contains Python and tests that differ from the advertised source tag. This review used the code inside the actual 0.0.6 archive; no matching public commit was identified for all of those files.
  • Gold Saucer’s source licence and toolkit licence are identifiable, but complete licence notices are absent from the distributed ZIP and the native programs were not independently rebuilt. Import seed files from trusted sources and use a password prompt rather than embedding credentials in the server address.
