How the game changes
- Play Castle Hammerwatch or Temple of the Sun with keys, mirrors, ore, tools, Strange Planks, chests and upgrades in the multiworld. Optional checks include recovery pickups, enemy loot, puzzles, switches, secrets and shops.
- Goals include all campaign bosses, escaping Castle after Worldfire with twelve planks, completing the Pyramid of Fear, or a configurable plank hunt. For plank hunts, return to the Castle bridge or Richard Cain outside the Temple to finish; mod 2.0.2 now displays a reminder when enough planks have been found.
- Optional local shuffles change enemies, gate types, shops, minor treasure or level exits. APWorld 4.1.4 revises exit generation and removes rear access to Temple floor-two light-bridge checks to match the mod.
- Mod 2.0.2 repairs the Temple hallway reward and ice-block gate setup, expands Chaos enemy selection and fixes special-key bindings for Explore Speed. It also seeds enemy layouts in race mode and distinguishes ready, playing and disconnected status.
- Floor master keys, bundled bronze keys, split tools and an optional hammer requirement reshape progression. The generator uses conservative consumable-key assumptions, so a tracker may show a gate out of logic even when your current inventory can open it.
- Foreign rewards have matched sprites or an AP symbol. Pickups appear at your feet, while shop and button effects have direct handlers. Recovery-item checks can be collected at full health or mana. Native co-op shares one Archipelago slot.
- Optional DeathLink and TrapLink connect deaths and traps across worlds. Explore Speed, fragile breakables, chat mirroring, shop hinting and the documented return-to-start command support navigation and tracking.
Before you start
- Use the original Hammerwatch, not Hammerwatch II or Hammerwatch Anniversary Edition. This review covers the Windows Steam installer route; base-game Linux or macOS availability does not establish support for this mod.
- Install APWorld 4.1.4 and the separate HammerwatchAP-v2.0.2.zip game mod. The World declares Archipelago 0.6.4 or newer and the 2.0 client line. Keep the paired files together and do not mix builds when continuing a generated room.
- Back up the game and saves. Extract the mod into its own clean folder outside the game directory, keep all supplied files together, run HammerwatchAPModInstaller.exe and select Hammerwatch.exe. The installer copies its folder contents and replaces mod asset/library folders.
- The installer patches SDL2-CS.dll and retains SDL2-CS_original.dll. Avoid overlapping mods. Run the installed APModUninstall.bat from the game directory only; it operates on relative paths.
- Connect through Archipelago on the main menu and check the displayed room and slot. Resume the matching save. If a server port changes, connect to the new address before loading the existing save, following the setup guide.
- AP saves contain the room password. Keep saves private and redact diagnostics. An explicit wss:// server address prevents the bundled network library from falling back to unencrypted WS; the bare-host connection route can use that fallback.
- The code retains checks for reconnection, but receipt ordering and save identity checks have limitations. Avoid switching rooms or slots with an active save, keep backups and confirm important received items after interruptions.
- A saved completed goal can be resent when loading the save, but ordinary reconnect does not retry that status by itself. Confirm that the server records your finish, especially if the connection drops near completion.
- TrapLink now interprets more foreign traps, including screen curvature and CRT effects. Those display changes have no automatic restoration timer in the reviewed handlers; leave TrapLink disabled if you want to avoid them.
- The World includes meaningful game-specific tests, which were inspected rather than run. Complete installer reconstruction, tracker/asset provenance and retail-version coverage remain incomplete; no completed campaign or crash-free runtime is claimed.
