How the game changes
- Checks: cards, secrets, challenge stars and mode-specific classrooms/completions, with optional duels, Quidditch, timed challenges, vendors and containers. Disabled card shuffle locks cards to their own checks; impossible post-ending checks are removed.
- Items: seven spells, tiered wizard cards, optional equipment, ordered progressive story keys or independent open-castle level keys, supplies and configurable traps. Vanilla starting spells and story ingredients have separate handling.
- Goals: the post-Basilisk ending in story mode; in open castle, satisfy the selected card, spell, level-completion, duel and Quidditch clauses to unlock the Great Hall. Client progress and the pause menu show remaining requirements.
- Logic: spell/key gates, running tiers, silver-card thresholds and safe default handling of one-way checks. Gold Card Room entry requires Spongify or Rictusempra together with Flipendo; invalid pool/seeder combinations are refused.
- Shared-room features: cosmetic ghosts show other HP2 players on the same map; /ghosts controls position sharing. DeathLink, RingLink and TrapLink have independent toggles and do not replace the game progression logic.
- Optional changes: traps, local sound/music/dialogue randomization, AP pickup appearances, vendor hints, trackers and a return-to-hub menu. Version 2.12.0 distinguishes a launcher window from a running game and holds automatic launch when a needed mod update fails.
Before you start
- Reviewed stable release 2.12.0, published October 9, 2026, requires an owned 2002 KnowWonder PC copy and HP2Engine 3.4 obtained separately through the modding Discord. Open castle also needs a separate matching HP2 Bingo installation. The engine and game are not included or independently inspected here.
- Windows 10/11 x64 is documented. On Linux, run the game/engine through Wine or Proton and the AP client natively; disable auto_launch_game and launch the matching game yourself. The client installs the mod, patches named INIs and can optionally shuffle local audio/dialogue files, with backups.
- Ghost players are enabled by default: other HP2 slots on the same map appear as cosmetic ghosts, and your position is shared through the AP room. /ghosts off stops that sharing. Ghosts have no collision and cannot be targeted.
- High-stakes item batches now call SaveGame before their APPLIED acknowledgements, with death/load deferral and rollback of unacknowledged work. Single filler/trap rewards can still be acknowledged without a save; older-save recovery and the interval between game application and server-ledger persistence are not fully protected. Keep a separate save backup.
- Checks and victory have retained reconnect paths. The client clears AP state when the seed or slot name changes, but the game bridge does not verify save seed/slot identity. Use the matching installation and a separate save; wrong-mode or stale-mod warnings are guidance rather than comprehensive rejection.
- The compiled mod embeds a re-imported vanilla wand and game-derived glasses/key textures, as identified by the source and package exports. Redistribution permission for those resources and a complete licence inventory were not found in the reviewed material; this does not determine infringement.
- Source/package comparison found 22 exact matches and 16 line-ending-only differences. The compiled mod matches the committed artifact; all 469 manifest entries reconcile with exact or captured CRLF bytes. Eighteen supplied test files contain 287 methods, including progression and generation tests. Sources and assertions were read without executing tests, the mod, compiler or game.
