Cursed Words: The Word Game That Isn'tArchipelago randomizer mod

An experimental word-building multiworld. Receive characters, stickers and stamps from other games, then send rewards by clearing encounters, building words and visiting shops. The maintainer still considers this preview unstable.

How the game changes

  • Character selection determines which campaigns enter the pool. Your starting character is available immediately, alongside a starting assortment of common stickers and stamps; further unlocks arrive through Archipelago.
  • Checks cover encounter clears per character, shop and encounter actions, money earned, word lengths and score thresholds. Optional categories add crowns, Michael encounters, bosses, pin upgrades, special shop purchases and tile types.
  • Choose to finish a run, defeat Michael or complete a chosen Crown tier with each selected goal character. The goal character list is restricted to the characters included in your seed.
  • Progressive items can expand the grid, unlock inventory slots, introduce higher item rarities and open locked tile positions. These extra restrictions are optional rather than mandatory parts of every campaign.
  • Progression rules use character-specific sticker and stamp synergies. Custom synergy lists change what the generator expects you to have before later encounters; they are not simply cosmetic presets.
  • Filler delivers money, consumable tiles, extra rerolls and tile boosts. Trap weighting and DeathLink are configurable. The latest client release fixes goal reporting and the Supervillain item's scattering behavior.

Before you start

  • This is an early-development preview, not a stable recommendation. The maintainer explicitly advises against large multiworlds because bugs may seriously disrupt play. Agree on an experimental session with the host before including it.
  • Windows installation is documented. Install BepInEx 5.4.23.5 x64, launch once, then place the release's Archipelago folder and its dependencies under BepInEx/plugins. Linux and Proton support are not established by this review.
  • Install the release's cursed_words.apworld separately in Archipelago. Client release 0.5.4 ships a world whose internal manifest reports 0.5.2 and minimum Archipelago 0.6.7; the release notes explicitly say there is no APWorld change in this patch.
  • Select an empty game save slot and enter the room address, exact slot name and optional password. AP saves use a distinct filename suffix. Back up existing saves and remove the Archipelago plugin folder to return to ordinary play.
  • Connection details, including the password, are stored in a local per-save JSON file. Use a room-only password and remove credentials before sharing diagnostics or saves. The reviewed binding stores host and slot, not an immutable seed identity: use a new save for a new seed.
  • Remain connected while playing. The reviewed check method returns immediately when disconnected, and pending item actions are cleared on disconnection. This review does not establish reliable offline play or crash-proof item delivery.
  • Use an external Archipelago text client for hints and a full sent/received history. In-game notifications are not a replacement for that history.
  • An open report says locked sticker slots are counted as level-one slots by effects such as the Chick stamp. Additional hidden bosses, several extra characters, quests, achievements and specific-word checks remain proposed work, not released promises.
  • For a smaller first experiment, choose fewer characters and the ordinary run goal. Michael automatically enables its encounters and at least Purple crowns; a Crown goal with crowns disabled also raises the option to Purple. These selections can add more checks than the initial toggle combination suggests.
