How the game changes
- Weapon, keycard and powerup pickups become checks, as do level exits. Receive level-specific keys, map access and weapons from the multiworld.
- A level-select hub tracks unlocked maps, keys, completed levels and remaining checks. Each map keeps its state when revisited.
- Choose episodes and either clear their levels or complete their boss maps. Thy Flesh Consumed is optional.
- Configure classic difficulty, monster and pickup randomization, mirrored maps, music and starting automaps.
- DeathLink, optional reset-on-death, split ammunition-capacity upgrades and advanced trick logic adjust the experience. Inventory and submitted checks survive map resets.
Before you start
- Buy/install Steam's DOOM + DOOM II collection; this entry covers original DOOM, not every campaign included in that collection. Artwork and review totals refer to the collection.
- Use current APDoom 2.0, not legacy 1.2.0 still linked by older tutorials. The maintainer explicitly withdraws support for the legacy client and documents serious old DeathLink issues.
- The new launcher detects installed Steam WADs. If copying manually, use the original DOS DOOM.WAD from dos/base, not a rerelease or shareware WAD.
- Install 2.0 in a fresh folder rather than mixing its 64-bit DLLs with the older 32-bit package. Back up your existing saves separately.
- The stable client works with the core Archipelago world. Separate beta APWorlds add features but are optional; this overview describes core gameplay.
- Windows and Linux AppImage builds are published, with explicit Steam Deck support. Custom WADs and additional sound modifications have their own compatibility limits; they are not automatically supported by this entry.
