How the game changes

  • Checks: GF acquisitions, story milestones, field and optional world-map draws, Triple Triad, optional encounters, rare cards, sidequests, magazines and stat/GF-ability milestones. Check groups are configurable; missable locations are excluded from progression placement.
  • Rewards: GFs, key items, consumables, gil and spell stocks or progressive magic families. Character junction rights, GF abilities, stat junctions and battle commands can become separate unlocks. Default checks-only magic uses multiworld stock caps and a starter kit.
  • Goals: defeat Ultimecia, defeat Omega Weapon or finish the Disc-1 Edea parade battle. The Edea goal removes later regions, checks and warp destinations. Default goal is Ultimecia.
  • Travel and pacing: Story Gates shape placement logic. Experimental Story Keys control world-map doors while preserving story passages; experimental Ragnarok unlocks/gates and optional client warps change travel access. These travel experiments are disabled by default.
  • Tracking and feedback: launcher client commands inspect missing checks and unlocks. Universal Tracker maps are bundled; optional PopTracker and Visual Tracker packs accompany the release. Supported in-game check text can display scouted rewards.
  • Optional disruption: configurable gil, HP, magic and music traps, plus DeathLink. Received deaths wait for combat and are not echoed back; assists and trap handling include safeguards for victory/menu transitions.

Before you start

  • Use the English Steam 2013 FF8_EN.exe on Windows with Archipelago 0.6.7+. Remastered, PSX and non-English executables are unsupported. The client changes live game memory; back up campaign saves and keep the game, client and generated World paired.
  • Keep the FF8 Client running and connected while playing. Persistent story flags and many draws can catch up, but some boss wins and item-consumption checks need observation at the time. In particular, using Solomon Ring offline after receiving Doomtrain from the multiworld is not reliably recovered by the reviewed detector.
  • Vehicle Unlocks, Vehicle Gates and Story Keys remain experimental and off by default. Story Keys modify world-map doors, with exceptions for required story passages; Story Gates separately pace placement logic. Leave the experimental switches off for a simpler first campaign.
  • The Doomtrain check still needs the in-game recipe as well as Solomon Ring. The World rule checks the ring but does not demonstrate the complete ingredient and locked-refining prerequisites; take care when combining ability locks with this check.
  • Save stamps and an in-save item cursor support campaign checks and older-save redelivery. Foreign-save holds and /ff8adopt are explicit, but some memory operations occur before the hold is applied, and older slot-based stamps can be accepted across seeds. Confirm the intended campaign save before connecting; adoption discards its previous stamp.
  • Interrupted item batches or full inventories can leave delivery accounting inconsistent. Local sidecar writes and concurrent-client locking are not atomic. Use a single client and retain backups; this review does not confirm crash-free recovery or exact-once delivery.
  • The APWorld embeds original kernel.bin data sections to support in-game text replacement. The repository has an MIT code licence, but the inspected distributions do not include its root notice or an attached permission covering those game-data sections. Redistribution authority for that data remains unestablished in the reviewed evidence.
  • All reviewed Python files match the identified 0.9.0 sources. Numerous supplied tests cover logic and client mechanisms, but Panludia did not execute them or play this build. The maintainer documents narrower goal coverage and missing check families; automated source evidence is not a completed multiworld.
