How the game changes
- Solving modules within missions sends checks; completing a section adds another reward. Bomb Fragments progressively open later sections of the custom adventure.
- Module items unlock their corresponding expert manuals and update the in-game tracker. Time++ adds thirty seconds, Time+ adds ten, and Strike+ increases permitted mistakes on newly loaded bombs.
- Vanilla Vanguard uses the game's original modules. Praetorian Pact adds a curated set of rule-seeded community modules and a longer, different campaign.
- The final challenge depends on the adventure: Vanilla Vanguard culminates at Bomb 6.1, while the inspected Praetorian Pact logic leads to Bomb 8.1 with a generated module composition.
- Random Rule Seed changes puzzle solutions and the corresponding manuals. Alternatively, choose a fixed rule seed, including the vanilla rules.
- Hardlock Modules prevents launching bombs until their required module unlocks are available. Without it, partial module checks can provide progress before the whole bomb is solvable.
- DeathLink is available in the July 0.3 generation, with explosion or strike behavior. Optional one-hit mode makes a single mistake fatal; it is separate from linked deaths.
- Praetorian Pact includes Empty Manual Page filler with no useful effect. Time, module and fragment items remain the meaningful progression rewards.
Before you start
- Use APWorld revision 0.3.0c with Archipelago 0.6.7 or later, the updated Steam Workshop Archipelago mod and Expert Manuals Client 0.3.0. The APWorld's numeric version remains 0.3.0; the c revision contains later logic fixes.
- Subscribe to Mod Selector and Archipelago in the Steam Workshop. Rule Seed Modifier is required for the default randomized puzzle rules; access to mods may first require completing the game's introductory bomb.
- The defuser connects through the Mod Selector tablet. The expert separately connects the manual client to the same room and slot and keeps its local web-server process running. A solo expert-for-yourself player needs both interfaces.
- Windows and macOS are explicitly supported. The author describes a Wine or Proton workaround but does not support Linux; it is not listed as a verified integration platform here.
- Praetorian Pact needs its listed community modules and Tweaks installed. It is not support for arbitrary Workshop modules. Prefer Vanilla Vanguard for a simpler setup.
- Offline play is explicitly unsupported. The expert client needs Internet access to retrieve the correct manuals even when the Archipelago server runs locally.
- Rule Seed Modifier can override the intended seed and produce mismatched manuals. Follow the maintainer's reset workaround rather than attempting to solve a bomb using the wrong manual.
- The mod's customized websocket-sharp can conflict with Hyperlink, Custom Keys and Tyler Verifies. Disable the Archipelago mod when playing incompatible non-AP modules.
- The author still describes an alpha implementation. Generation can occasionally fail placement; the guide recommends regenerating. The macOS manual client may need executable permission and a terminal launch.
